Even if youve managed to put your entire life on one device, there may be times when you have to go elsewhere to manage things. Whether your battery dies or you forget to take your device with you, it pays to keep your life synced up so you can access it anywhere.
Websites and software have made it easier than ever to share files and other content with faraway friends and colleagues. These tools can also help you stay up-to-date, no matter where youre working from. If youre looking for a convenient way to stay connected without having to be hooked up to so many electrical devices, here are some of the best syncing tools on the web.
Dropbox
Dropbox, a platform-agnostic server, lets you decide how open or private your files need to be. Open an account on the Dropbox website and start uploading your files into one or more folders. Next, send invitations to friends and associates to view select folders. Once theyre in, they can view or even edit all the documents in that folder. Of course, you can also upload files from one device, then go into a Dropbox folder on another device and pick up where you left off.
Syncplicity
Unlike Dropbox, Syncplicity lets you upload either files or folders onto the server, and you dont have to invite people to give them permission to view your folders. Its also great for enterprise use, with advanced security settings that keep your documents safe whether working online or offline. Although a Mac version will be released in September 2013, for the time being its only available to users on Windows platforms.
Windows Live Sync
Dont let the name fool you; Windows Live Sync (formerly known as FolderShare) allows you to share files across both Windows and Mac platforms. This free file sharing software doesnt offer backup services, but it makes it a lot easier for you to start a file on one device and finish it on another. You can also invite other people to retrieve the data, so coworkers can make necessary edits to company-wide documents, and family members can see your latest vacation photos and videos.
SyncToy
The latest version of this syncing and backup tool from Microsoft Windows offers faster performance, more customizable settings, and fewer bugs than its predecessor. Now, instead of constantly downloading files on one device to all your other devices, you can just log into SyncToy and retrieve documents, videos, photos, or other files. Its the perfect platform for those who tend to move from one device to the other but need to access the same files each time.
After a while, it gets frustrating having to carry around all those USB ports just to take your files with you. Thanks to these and other file-sharing sites, you no longer have to.
